New Zealand’s avocado shortage is not a laughing matter. People have been stealing the nation’s avocados, meaning the price of a single avocado has increased to $6.00. This has become a big part of a rumour that’s been in the making since 2014. The hilarious rumour about New Zealand’s gardening laws started online, and has spread across countries. It started when a whole lot of people played along with the Reddit user who said that gardening had become illegal in New Zealand.
The rumour fooled hundreds, including rap icon, Snoop Dogg, who found the whole situation hilarious. California-based rapper posted a picture on Facebook of a woman growing an “illegal” avocado tree, captioning the picture: “Hahahahahah she a g”.
Some kiwis took the prank to the next level, while the rest of the world took the situation very seriously. Stories were shared about police raids, stolen fruit, and protests. Reddit users from overseas went crazy trying to work out the truth behind the rumour. The ones who believed it were all wondering what the logic is behind banning gardening. One user commented, “Are you serious? Really? And I thought the US had some idiotic laws.”
